Protomaps

Self-host an entire world basemap as a single PMTiles file

What is Protomaps?

Protomaps is an open-source system for serverless maps. Its PMTiles format stores a whole tileset in one file that can be served from cheap object storage such as S3 or Cloudflare R2, with no tile server.

Key features

  • PMTiles single-file tile archives
  • Daily world basemap builds from OpenStreetMap
  • Serve from S3, R2 or any static host
  • Open basemap styles for MapLibre

Strengths

  • No per-request fees when self-hosted
  • You control caching and offline use

Limitations

  • You run your own hosting
